Sources and publication policy
Food DB attaches sources, confidence, and review states to public values whenever possible. It also retains candidates and incomplete records, so not every internal record has the same publication status.
Frequently referenced sources
These canonical sources are ordered by the number of Food records that reference them. Different sources support different attributes such as nutrition, weight, names, or storage.

View source →A registered source does not guarantee every attribute of every Food. Evidence and review status are evaluated at the value or claim level.
Confidence and review
Directly linked to an official or primary source, with reviewed Food / Variant mapping.
Source-backed, but based on one source, an indirect mapping, or an applicability condition still under review.
Estimated, inferred from a similar Food, or weakly sourced. Not promoted to a public value by default.
Publication boundaries
Meets evidence, naming, and publication requirements for normal food pages.
Shown with explicit gaps, scope, or applicability conditions.
Kept internal until review, sourcing, and duplicate resolution are complete.
Unknown values are not replaced with zero, and conflicting sources are not averaged without evidence. They remain missing, candidate, or conflict records until reviewed.
Images
Food DB may use generated illustrations when a suitable image is missing. Generated status and review state are retained so the image can be replaced.
Foods without an image show a placeholder.
External photographs or figures are used only after their source and usage terms are checked.
Images with unclear usage terms are not published.
Update policy
Food DB improves from new sources, recurring unresolved cases found in real recipes, and corrections to public data. Candidate creation is separate from canonical promotion, and evidence, duplication, and applicability are checked before publication.
